Sumter County will begin construction on the Morse Boulevard at Sandalwood Drive/Chitty Chatty Run Improvement Project on Monday, May 18, 2026.
The project is located at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Chitty Chatty Run/Sandalwood Drive and is expected to take approximately 45 calendar days to complete, weather permitting.
The scope of work includes installing a directional median opening to improve traffic flow and enhance safety at the intersection.
Following community concerns regarding traffic operations at the intersection, a traffic signal warrant analysis and feasibility study were conducted. Based on the results of those evaluations, a directional median opening was identified as the preferred improvement option to improve traffic operations and reduce potential conflict points at the intersection.
Once completed, motorists traveling from Chitty Chatty Run and Sandalwood Drive will be restricted to right-turn-only movements onto Morse Boulevard. Left turns from Morse Boulevard onto the side streets will continue to be permitted.
The updated traffic pattern is expected to improve safety by reducing the number of locations where vehicles cross paths, lowering the potential for crashes from 36 possible crossing points to 9. The changes are also expected to reduce the likelihood of right-angle crashes and improve traffic flow by decreasing delays for vehicles exiting the side streets.
During construction, motorists should expect temporary daytime lane closures on the inside lanes of Morse Boulevard, along with minor traffic delays. No nighttime work is currently anticipated.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution, follow posted signage, and allow additional travel time when traveling through the area.
