Resident Advisory: Beware of Utility Refund Scams

District staff have received reports of residents being contacted by individuals claiming to offer refunds related to utility or irrigation billing.

These callers may identify themselves as representatives of a government agency, utility provider, or another official organization and may instruct residents to access their email, click a link, provide personal information, or take immediate action to claim a refund.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution and remember the following:

• District Utilities & Billing will not contact residents by phone and direct them to click links in order to receive a refund.
• Never provide personal, financial, or account information to an unsolicited caller.
• Do not click on links or open attachments received as a result of an unexpected phone call.
• Caller ID information can be manipulated and should not be used as the sole method of verifying a caller’s identity.
• If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and contact the organization directly using a published phone number.

We encourage residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Staying informed is one of the best ways to protect yourself from fraud and identity theft.

For more information, please contact the Utilities Department by email or at 352-750-0000.
