Landowner Elections Frequently Asked Questions
- Landowner Elections
- The Florida Statute establishing Landowner Election Guidelines and Landowner Election Procedures state that a Community Development District that is less than six years old is required to hold a Landowner Election every two years with the actual election held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
- Who can register to vote?
- For Landowner Elections, each Landowner shall be entitled to cast one vote per acre or part thereof of land owned by him or her and located within the District for each person to be elected.
- How do I register to vote?
- There is no registration for Landowner Elections.
- What is the deadline to register to vote?
- There is no registration or deadline for Landowner Elections.
- How do I vote absentee ballot?
- The Florida Statute establishing Landowner Election Guidelines and Landowner Election Procedures makes no provision for write in or absentee ballots. Landowners may vote in person at the landowners’ election meeting or by written proxies. Proxy forms may be picked up at the Sumter Landing District Office, 1894 Laurel Manor Drive, The Villages, Florida.
- What times are the polls open on election day?
- Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on election day. Any voter who is standing in line at 7:00 p.m. is eligible to cast a vote.
- What kind of identification do I need to bring to the polls?
- You will be asked to provide a current Villages Resident Identification Card. If not in possession of a current Villages Resident Identification Card, a Recorded Deed indicating the property transfer information and new landowner information will be acceptable.
- Can I still vote if I do not bring identification?
- No. You will be asked to provide a current Villages Resident Identification Card. If not in possession of a current Villages Resident Identification Card, a Recorded Deed indicating the property transfer information and new landowner information will be acceptable.
- Where do I vote?
- Landowner Elections will be held at Lake Miona Regional Recreation Center, 1526 Buena Vista Boulevard, The Villages.
- Becoming a candidate?
- In October there will be an advertised Landowners’ Election Meeting where nominations are accepted for the positions with expiring terms.
- How do the Districts transition from Landowner Elections to Qualified Electors?
- Initially, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected for a period of 4 years, and the three candidates receiving the next largest number of votes shall be elected for a period of two years, with the term of office for each successful candidate commencing upon election. The members of the first board elected by landowners shall serve their respective 4-year or 2-year terms; however, the next election by landowners shall be held on the first Tuesday in November. Thereafter, there shall be an election of supervisors for the district every 2 years in November. The second and subsequent landowners’ election shall be announced at a public meeting of the board at least 90 days prior to the date of the landowners’ meeting. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected to serve for a 4-year period, and the remaining candidate elected shall serve for a 2-year period.
Commencing 6 years after the initial appointment of members or, for a district exceeding 5,000 acres in area, 10 years after the initial appointment of members, the position of each member whose term has expired shall be filled by a qualified elector of the district, elected by the qualified electors of the district. Thereafter, as terms expire, board members shall be qualified electors elected by qualified electors of the district for a term of 4 years.
